SHETLAND Islands Council’s ferry service is from today (Wednesday) operating with further changes to its timetables for Bressay, Whalsay and Skerries “to reflect local need”. According to the council, the changes “reflect the needs of island communities following a period of recent consultation with island residents and key ferry users”.

The council ferry Fivla was brought in to run the service while Leirna underwent repairs over the weekend. A spokesperson for Shetland islands Council said: “We can confirm that a vehicle sustained minor damage just before 9 am on Friday at the Bressay ferry terminal, when the Leirna moved at her berth due to very high winds.
THE YELL Sound ferry service has been reduced to a single vessel after the stand-in boat Fivla broke down on Tuesday morning. The relief vessel is standing in for the usual Yell ferry Dagalien, which is undergoing planned maintenance on her propulsion systems. The Fivla encountered problems earlier on Tuesday morning before the service resumed to a normal timetable, but the route was reduced.

From Viking times Bressay Sound has provided a safe anchorage and in the mid 17th century up to 1,500 Dutch herring fishing vessels gathered here. Noss, a small island off the east coast of Bressay, is a National Nature Reserve with over 100,000 pairs of breeding seabirds.
Leave the route at Lerwick and take the car ferry to Bressay. Follow the signs to Noss (3.5 miles to Noss Sound). On Foot: There are no national long distance routes in the area. It is possible to walk on quiet surfaced roads from the Bressay ferry terminal to Noss Sound. (4 miles including 0.5 miles on unsurfaced track to the ferry).
Nearby is Bressay Marina. On one side of this is the pier from which the small ferry to Mainland ran in the days before car ferries: as recently as 1975. The southern end of Bressay is dominated by the 226m high Ward of Bressay, which with its TV masts can be seen from a surprisingly large part of Shetland.
Usage: Ferry Terminal. About Maryfield (Bressay) The ferry arrives on Bressay near the 19th century house and old pier at Maryfield. Next to the ferry terminal car park is the Bressay Heritage Centre which houses fascinating seasonal exhibitions on the culture, history and natural heritage of the island.
Caught the ferry from Lerwick across to Bressay. Visited the Heritage Centre and then walked to Speldiburn Cafe about one mile away. There was a good range of food and I settled for the St Clement's cake and a cup of tea.
