ACCORD with the Bressay History Group: Overview.

History Originally set up in January 2014 as Bressay Community Development Association, the group's intention was to address major challenges faced by the residents of Bressay including depopulation, an aging population, lack of on-island services and increasing ferry fare costs to the Shetland mainland.

Bressay is home to the poet and author Stella Sutherland and Dr. Jonathan Wills, a politician and author who has written a brief guide to the isle among other topics. During the summer months, there is a passenger ferry service across the narrow Noss Sound that links the east coast of Bressay to Gungstie on the uninhabited island of Noss which is a National Nature Reserve.The road in the south of the island here runs along the west coast, and ends at the Bressay Lighthouse. This was built by David and Thomas Stevenson in 1858 and has been a landmark for generations of travellers arriving in Lerwick by sea. Eastern Bressay is characterised by upland moorlands. Off the east coast is the Isle of Noss.Now compiled and published, by the Society, a Monumental Inscription and Dedication Plaque record for the parish of Bressay. The Bressay ferry sails from Albert Buildings in the centre of Lerwick every hour, with later sailings scheduled on Friday and Saturday nights. The ferry berths in Bressay right next to the Bressay Heritage Centre which features seasonal exhibitions on the culture, history and natural heritage of the island.From Viking times Bressay Sound has provided a safe anchorage and in the mid 17th century up to 1,500 Dutch herring fishing vessels gathered here. Noss, a small island off the east coast of Bressay, is a National Nature Reserve with over 100,000 pairs of breeding seabirds.

Bressay Lighthouse was one of four lighthouses built in Shetland between 1854 and 1858 which were designed by brothers David Stevenson and Thomas Stevenson. David Stevenson initially maintained that building a lighthouse in Shetland waters was impossible, too dangerous and too expensive, and that any ship's captain who took this route was mad.

Bressay's Heritage Centre stands above the car park for the Bressay Ferry, making it just a short walk from the ferry itself. The heritage centre is owned and operated by the Bressay History Group and offers a wide range of fascinating displays and exhibitions throughout the summer months.

Bronze Age Bressay! is a community project being undertaken in partnership between the Bressay History Group, Archaeology Scotland and The SCAPE Trust. The project aims to excavate an eroding burnt mound on the island of Bressay, at a site that lies opposite to Shetland’s capital, Lerwick.

Bressay Lighthouse. Bressay in the Shetland Islands is 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) south-east of Lerwick. At 11 square miles (28 km2), Bressay is the fifth largest island in Shetland. The population is around 360 people, concentrated in the middle of the west coast, around Glebe, Fullaburn and Maryfield.
